Corresponding to the most widely used 121℃ sterilization temperature: ~0.1 MPa
Corresponding to the high-temperature rapid 134℃ sterilization program: ~0.2 MPa
For sterilization of heat-sensitive items using the 115℃ program: ~0.07 MPa
Design and Capacity: Vertical models feature a top-loading vertical chamber and are typically suitable for small-scale applications. Horizontal models feature a front-loading horizontal chamber with a capacity of 100 liters or more and are suitable for large-scale batch processing.
Loading Convenience: Vertical models require lifting items for loading and unloading, making them more suitable for small instruments. Horizontal sterilizers are generally equipped with pull-out trays, facilitating the loading of heavy or large items such as liquid bottles or textile bundles.
Performance and Cost: Most horizontal models offer superior exhaust performance (some with pulse vacuum functionality) and higher sterilization efficiency, and consequently come at a higher price.
Applications: Vertical models are suitable for small clinics, community laboratories, and beauty salons. Horizontal models are specifically designed for hospitals, food processing plants, and large research institutions.
Higher pressure is not necessarily better: First, in a horizontal pressure steam autoclave, excessive pressure during operation will trigger the safety valve to release pressure. In severe cases, this can even lead to safety incidents such as chamber rupture or explosion. Second, pressures of 0.1 MPa (corresponding to 121°C) and 0.2 MPa (corresponding to 134°C) are sufficient to kill all microorganisms, including spores; further increasing the pressure does not yield a significant improvement in sterilization effectiveness. On the contrary, the higher temperatures associated with excessive pressure can accelerate the aging of heat-sensitive plastic and rubber instruments. Therefore, simply select the pressure setting from the standard program that matches the type of items to be sterilized.
