How does a rotary evaporator work:

A rotary evaporator uses heat, rotation, and vacuum to efficiently evaporate solvents. The rotating flask increases surface area, while the vacuum lowers the boiling point, allowing for gentle evaporation at low temperatures. Condensed vapors are collected in a separate flask, making it ideal for solvent removal or concentration.

How to Use a Rotary Evaporator (Brief Steps):

  1. Set up the system – Connect the evaporator to a vacuum pump, cooling water, and receiving flask.

  2. Add sample – Pour the liquid into the evaporation flask (don’t overfill).

  3. Secure flask – Attach the flask to the rotary joint and secure with a clip.

  4. Start rotation – Begin rotating the flask (usually 100–150 rpm).

  5. Set water bath – Adjust the temperature (commonly 30–60°C).

  6. Apply vacuum – Turn on the vacuum slowly to reduce pressure and start evaporation.

  7. Collect solvent – Condensed vapors collect in the receiving flask.

  8. Finish – Stop rotation, turn off vacuum, raise the flask, and remove it carefully.
