Step-by-Step Workflow
Sound Wave Transmission
The handheld transducer (probe) contains piezoelectric crystals. When an electric current is applied, these crystals vibrate rapidly, generating sound waves that travel through the body.
Wave Propagation and Reflection
Sound waves pass through various tissues (skin, fat, muscle, organs). When they encounter interfaces between tissues of different densities (such as between soft tissue and bone, or between a liquid and a solid), some of the sound waves are reflected back as echoes, while the remainder continue to propagate deeper into the body.
Echo Reception
The same set of piezoelectric crystals in the probe also acts as a receiver. When the returning echoes strike these crystals, they cause vibrations and generate faint electrical signals.
Real-Time Display
The scanner’s computer maps each echo point into a grayscale image and displays it on the screen:
Pure white — bone, calcifications (strong reflectors)
Gray — soft tissue (moderate reflectors)
Black — fluid-filled areas, such as cysts or blood vessels (weak or no echoes)
