FAQ

Difference between a Class B, Class N and Class S autoclave?

According to the EN 13060 standard, Class B is the highest level. It completely evacuates air through multiple pulsed vacuum cycles and can sterilize all types of loads, including packaged and unpackaged items, solid objects, and hollow porous items (such as dental handpieces and endoscopes). Class N can only sterilize unpackaged solid loads, while Class S can only sterilize specific types of loads, making its scope of application much narrower than that of Class B.

What items can a Class B sterilizer sterilize?

It can meet the sterilization needs of the vast majority of medical institutions and laboratories, including dental and orthopedic surgical instruments with internal cavities, flexible endoscopes, packaged sterile consumables, glassware, culture media, dressings, and rubber products. It can also sterilize liquid items using the appropriate program.

Requirements for Items to Be Sterilized in the Class B Autoclave

The load should not exceed 75% of the chamber volume, and sufficient space must be left between items to allow steam circulation. Hollow instruments must have their joints opened and components disassembled and should be placed with the openings facing downward. Liquids should be placed on the lower shelf to prevent boiling over. When mixing metal and fabric items, place the metal items on the lower shelf to prevent condensation from wetting the packaging.

Must Class B Autoclaves Use Distilled Water?

Yes, distilled water or deionized water must be used. Tap water contains minerals that, with prolonged use, will form scale on the surface of the piping. This leads to reduced heating efficiency, pipe blockages, and abnormal temperature/pressure readings. Such conditions can significantly shorten the equipment’s service life and even result in sterilization failure.
