What exactly is the difference between haze and light transmittance?

Light transmittance measures how much light passes through a material—the higher the value, the more “transparent” the material appears.

Haze, on the other hand, measures the degree to which light is scattered after passing through a material—the stronger the scattering, the more “hazy” or “whitish” the material appears.

What is the standard test method for measuring haze in plastics?

The most widely used international standard is ASTM D1003. The testing principle is as follows:

A light beam from a light source is directed perpendicularly onto the sample.

An integrating sphere collects all light that passes through the sample.

A haze meter measures both the total transmitted light (all light that passes through) and the scattered light (light deviating from the incident direction by > 2.5°).

Calculations:

Light transmittance (%) = Total transmitted light ÷ Incident light × 100%

Haze (%) = Scattered light ÷ Total transmitted light × 100%

This standard applies to transparent plastic sheets, films, and similar materials of uniform thickness. Before testing, ensure the sample surface is clean and free of scratches.

How often does a haze meter need to be thoroughly recalibrated?

A comprehensive calibration is recommended every 12 months. However, immediate calibration is required—without waiting for the annual cycle—in the following situations:

After the instrument has been subjected to impact, dropped, or shifted during transport;

After replacing the light source, the coating of the integrating sphere, or the photodetector;

When routine verification using a standard plate (recommended weekly) reveals data deviations exceeding specifications;

Operational Recommendations: Before daily use, perform a quick verification (i.e., “calibration check”) using the supplied standard haze plate to ensure the day’s data is reliable; annual calibration should be performed by a qualified metrology institution or the original manufacturer, which will issue a calibration certificate.
